The Legacy of SRB2Kart in 2025 and beyond

A history of community powered lifeblood

How to get started with SRB2Kart

The first thing you'd want is obviously SRB2Kart itself downloaded. From that link you can download the latest version so far [v1.6] and install it in your folder of choice.

If you want some more bells and whistles [and also are on Windows], you can also download the custom Saturn client and extract it in the game folder to play with that instead, since it is compatible with vanilla servers. Can be worth trying out if you want some more performance and features as it has been maintained more recently than the last official release.

For Windows, SRB2Kart also includes two .bat files to launch the game in either Software or OpenGL mode. For 3D models on base characters and items, higher FPS if you have a decent GPU and smoother visuals overall, OpenGL is recommended. Launching it once with the OGL .bat and closing it should make it save the OpenGL preference for the next time you open it with either the official or Saturn client.

How to practice with SRB2Kart

Remember the mention of the game only having a Record Attack mode?

Well...it may not have other bots to race with, but Record Attack should do for you to test the controls and get a feel for how the driving is like. Record Attack also runs in the game's Hard speed [think of it as the 150cc speed in Mario Kart], so getting acquainted with Record Attack could give you an edge if you play in Normal speed servers.

The Staff Ghosts in some tracks are easier than others, with a few of them being particularly nasty, but overall you can brush up your skills by aiming for Silver or even Gold medals. Gold medals are always tied to the fastest staff ghost available, so if you see you can catch one, go for it.

If you want to practice with a specific server's set of mods though, you can opt to join the server you chose, leave but not close the game, and then head over to Multiplayer > Offline to practice alone, since all the mods loaded [character, tracks, gameplay mods] should stay active after you entered and left the server. If you have a replay saved from that server, loading that replay [with the load replay with mods option] should also do the trick].

The basics of SRB2Kart's gameplay

You must know how the usual Kart Racer plays, so you know what the basic controls are: Accel, Brake, Drift and Item.

The Tricks & Secrets menu in the options screen displays what each item does as well as some tips and tricks, but I'll also give you a rundown of those gameplay tricks you can use.

So go give that a read, and then you can check out these details that aren't explained there.

  • To hold items, you only need to tap the item button rather than holding it down, having to press it again to drop or lob it forward. But note that dragging items will quickly start slowing you down.
  • Jawz aren't set to a path like Red Shells, working more like homing missiles that try to follow their target. As the user, make sure that they are targeted and at range.
  • If you are trying to escape from one, swerving so that it swerves into a wall is a good tactic. It may also run into a wall if it tries to follow you from too far away after a sharp turn.
  • The SPB [Blue Shell equivalent] follows the 1st place racer once deployed, but it can be outrunned with good driving - as long as the player doesn't mess up [or gets hit by something].
  • this should go to the next section! - but the tabs above prob should do something too
